December 31st, 2007

This morning wasn’t the greatest for me, I woke up and my tonsils were really swollen, but that’s not totally out of the ordinary for me. After our regular morning meeting we all headed to the tube station to go to St. Paul’s Cathedral (see left). I have to admit I wasn’t all that excited to go in the beginning, but the experience was amazing. It’s definetly on my list of top three best things we have done so far! The inside of the cathedral is breath taking. Some of us decided to take a free guided tour that lasted about an hour, and I am definetly glad I opted for it. The art work is absolutely incredible, especially the mosaics. After the tour was over, we had the opportunity to go up to the very top of the dome. Three hundred and sixty five feet later, and four hundred and thirty four steps up and I reached the top. It was a bit of a work out (but good considering it’s new years eve and I’ll be drinking later).

Once we got to the top, it was an absolutely amazing view (see picture to the right). You could see all of London! I got some great photographs. We stayed up at the top for a little bit but then it got crowded so we headed down. We only had about 10 minutes before we had to meet back outside but Amy and I really wanted to go see the crypt so we took a quick look around. There is so much history down there! It was cool to see the Duke of Wellington’s tomb as well as where Christopher Wren (the architect) is laid to rest. It was really cool to see the church where Princess Diana married Prince Charles (I didn’t realize it was the same church until the very end). I am not a religious person, but there is some great beauty in old churches.

After being in the cathedral a good two to three hours we met back up. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for my lunch today—packing a sandwich is definetly cheaper. It was only about 3 and we were then let free to take a nap and get ready for New Years Eve celebrations. It wasn’t the busiest day we’ve had, but I certainly enjoyed it. I’m now off to ring in the New Year and Trafalgar Square.
